What this means for firms. The pace across four separate platforms in one week shows the mid-tier land grab has no single leader. Firms weighing their own position should benchmark against whichever platform is most active in their region, not just the largest name.

Technical Updates
FRC revises UK auditing standards to align with IAASB changes
Periods from 15 Dec 2026External expert reliance
The Financial Reporting Council announced revisions to UK auditing standards and one UK assurance standard on 23 September, aligning them with equivalent changes issued by the IAASB. The targeted amendments clarify practitioner responsibilities when relying on the work of an external expert and reinforce expectations around robust evaluation and documentation. The revised standards apply to audits of financial statements for periods commencing, and assurance reports dated, on or after 15 December 2026. The FRC framed the change as reducing cost for cross-border reporters by keeping the UK aligned with a single international baseline.
What this means for firms. Any engagement relying on external experts, valuers, actuaries, or specialist surveyors, needs its documentation standard reviewed against the new expectations before the 15 December 2026 cut-off. This is an audit methodology update, not a footnote.

Amsterdam- and London-based HeadFirst Global rebranded to Vertage on 23 September, consolidating 11 operating businesses under a single €10bn platform. The structure is a template worth noting for UK corporate finance teams advising multi-brand consolidators considering a single-brand rationalisation exercise of their own.
What this means for firms. Corporate finance teams advising PE-backed platform businesses should be pitching brand-rationalisation and holdco-restructuring mandates now. Vertage is a live template to reference in those conversations.

Consumer Duty CP26/23 consultation closes; final rules expected Q1 2027
The FCA's consultation CP26/23 on the scope and proportionality of the Consumer Duty closed on 18 September 2026, with final rules now expected in Q1 2027. Proposals include clearer boundaries on when the Duty applies, reduced obligations for wholesale firms and firms without direct end-customer relationships, and an agent-as-client clarification directly relevant to wealth managers dealing through IFA distribution chains.
What this means for firms. IFA networks with wholesale-adjacent business lines should map current Consumer Duty obligations against the proposed boundary now, so the Q1 2027 final rules are a confirmation exercise rather than a scramble.
