Technical Updates

Revised Audit Regulations live from 1 October with a 90-day dispensation cap

1 October 2026 go-liveMax 90-day dispensation

The revised Audit Regulations come into force on 1 October 2026. The principal change confirms that where a registered audit firm breaches eligibility requirements, any dispensation permitting it to continue as statutory auditor may not exceed 90 days. Audit compliance partners should update internal escalation procedures and monitoring reports ahead of the deadline.

What this means for firms. Update escalation runbooks and status reporting so a breach is caught early enough for the 90-day clock to be workable. Silent breaches will now translate into audit-firm risk faster than the old regime allowed.

IAASA adopts revised ISQM (Ireland) 1 and 2

IAASAMay 2026 revisions

Ireland's Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority has adopted the revised ISQM (Ireland) 1 and ISQM (Ireland) 2 (May 2026 versions). Irish audit firms should ensure system-of-quality-management documentation reflects the revised text before the next monitoring cycle. The refresh pairs directly with the ISAE (Ireland) 3000 sustainability assurance work Chartered Accountants Ireland has already highlighted for the year.

Government opens Corporate Reporting Framework review

Reshape annual reportsProportionality, sustainability

The UK government has opened a wide-ranging review of the corporate reporting framework that is expected to reshape annual reports for entities of all sizes. Early signals point to greater proportionality for smaller companies alongside expanded sustainability and assurance disclosures for the largest reporters. Reporting teams and audit engagement leaders should monitor scoping papers as they land.

ICAEW responds to Finance Bill 2026-27 and treaty withholding consultations

ICAEW submissionsTransitional provisions

ICAEW has filed responses to two Treasury consultations: the draft legislation for Finance Bill 2026-27 and proposals to simplify treaty relief from withholding tax on interest paid overseas. Both submissions push for clearer transitional provisions and reduced administrative overhead for advisers. Firms handling cross-border interest flows should track the withholding proposals closely.

MTD ITSA: the gap between in scope and ready is where firms lose fee time

7 November interim deadlineSoftware, bookkeeping, agent auth

AccountingWEB reports that while most firms can quantify how many clients fall within MTD for Income Tax, far fewer have a defensible view of how many are technically ready to file. With the 7 November interim deadline visible on the horizon, software onboarding, bookkeeping backlogs, and agent authorisation are called out as the three most common bottlenecks in mid-sized practices.

What this means for firms. Score every in-scope client on the three readiness gates now. Any red on software, bookkeeping, or agent authorisation should be a partner-owned action item, not a filing-week surprise.

BHP welcomes 44-strong trainee intake; Azets adds a senior hire

44 new BHP traineesAzets senior hire

BHP has welcomed a 44-strong intake of accountancy trainees this month, one of its largest cohorts to date. Separately, Azets has appointed Michael Norrie as an associate, continuing the firm's steady pace of senior hires across the mid-market. Both moves reinforce the read that mid-tier practices are competing on cohort scale and lateral hires at the same time.

BUDGET 28 OCT

Autumn Budget 28 October: business rates and CIR changes signalled

28 October 2026Small Business Rates Relief, CIR

The Chancellor will deliver the Autumn Budget on Wednesday 28 October alongside the OBR's economic and fiscal forecast. Corporation tax is signalled as broadly stable, but wider business rates reform, including changes to Small Business Rates Relief, and modifications to the Corporate Interest Restriction reporting framework, are expected. Corporate finance teams should factor the timing into deal calendars and vendor due diligence.

What this means for firms. Deal calendars and vendor due diligence should not have completion events landing across 28 October. CIR reporting-framework changes may also affect ongoing debt-financed acquisitions in due diligence.

PE-to-PE sales now a growing share of professional-services activity

Onward PE salesLegal and accounting

Consolidation continues to shape the UK and Ireland professional services market, and advisers report strong pipelines heading into Q4. A growing share of activity now represents PE-to-PE onward sales of assets acquired in the early consolidation cycles, a signal that the market has moved from platform build-out into second-owner value creation and refinancing.
